John McCann (politician)

John McCann (born June 17, 1905 in Dublin , † February 23, 1980 ) was an Irish playwright , journalist and politician .

McCann worked as a journalist and wrote dramas for Radio Éireann and later for the Abbey Theater .

In 1939 he was elected to the Dáil Éireann in a by-election for the Fianna Fáil and thus filled the vacant seat of James Beckett again. In the 1954 elections for the 15th Dáil Éireann, McCann could not defend his mandate and thus left the House of Commons. From 1946 to 1947 and for the second time from 1964 to 1965 he held the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin ( Lord Mayor of Dublin ).

His son is the Irish theater and film actor Donal McCann .
