John R. Eden

John Rice Eden (born February 1, 1826 in Bath County , Kentucky , †  June 9, 1909 in Sullivan , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1863 and 1887 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives several times .

Career

In his youth, John Eden came to Indiana with his parents , where he attended public schools. After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1853, he began to work in Sullivan in this profession. Between 1856 and 1860 he served as the district attorney in the 17th Judicial District of Illinois. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1862 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded James Carroll Robinson on March 4, 1867 . Since he was not confirmed in 1864, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1865 . This was shaped by the events of the civil war . In November 1868 he ran for the office of governor of Illinois, but was defeated by Republican John M. Palmer with 44:56 percent of the vote.

In 1872 Eden was elected to Congress in the 15th district of his state, where he spent three more legislative terms after two re-elections between March 4, 1873 and March 3, 1879. From 1875 he was chairman of the Committee on War Claims . In 1878 he was not nominated for re-election by his party. After that he practiced as a lawyer again. In 1884, he was elected one last time to Congress in the 17th District of Illinois. Between March 4, 1885 and March 3, 1887, he completed another term there. For the elections of 1886 he tried unsuccessfully to nominate his party again.

After his time in the US House of Representatives finally ended, John Eden worked as a lawyer again. He died in Sullivan on June 9, 1909.
