John W. McCrindle

John Watson McCrindle (born February 16, 1825 in Maybole , South Ayrshire , † July 16, 1913 in Westcliff-on-Sea ) was a British classical philologist who dealt with the ancient sources on India .

He was the principal of Government College of Patna and a Fellow of Calcutta University . He authored a number of papers on Ancient India as described by the ancient authors, including the works of Ktesias , Megasthenes and Arrian ; the Periplus Maris Erythraei ("Coastal Voyage of the Red Sea"); Ptolemy 's Geography of India and the Invasion of India by Alexander the Great .
