Joliet (file system)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joliet is a file system from Microsoft for CD-ROMs . It was not an extension of the ISO 9660 - standards defined, but based on the data structures of ISO 9660 that are interpreted differently than in the standard. Since the Joliet file system stands independently and without a logical connection next to the ISO 9660 file system, there is no connection between the file names in ISO 9660 and Joliet in contrast to Rockridge .

In the Joliet file system, a file name can be up to 64 characters long; a path name including the file name cannot be longer than 120 characters. In contrast to ISO 9660, file names may contain uppercase and lowercase letters and Unicode characters.

Joliet format CDs contain two file systems: a true ISO-9660 file system for compatibility and the actual Joliet system. The file contents usually refer to the same areas of the medium, so they only exist once physically. Using the block numbers that are used jointly, connections could theoretically be established between the file names in the Joliet and ISO-9660 area, but this connection is not possible with empty files.

Joliet format is supported Windows - OS / 2 - and UNIX -based operating systems (including Mac OS X ), one whereas, for example, for older Macintosh operating systems external help is required (see below).
