Joseph Jonathan Davis (born April 13, 1828 in Louisburg , Franklin County , North Carolina , †  August 7, 1892 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1875 and 1881 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Davis attended Louisburg Academy , the Wake Forest College and then the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg ( Virginia ). After a subsequent law degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his admission to the bar in 1850, he began to work in this profession in Oxford . He later moved his law firm to his home town of Louisburg. During the Civil War , Davis was a captain in the Confederation Army .

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . From 1868 to 1870 he was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives . In the congressional election of 1874 Davis was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Republican William Alexander Smith on March 4, 1875 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1881 .

After retiring from the US House of Representatives, Davis returned to practice as a lawyer. From 1887 he was a judge at the North Carolina Supreme Court . He died on August 7, 1892 in Louisburg. Joseph Davis was married to Catherine E. Davis (1830-1881), with whom he had two children.
