The Journal of Biblical Literature is an English-language US-American, internationally oriented journal in which articles on Biblical Exegesis are published according to the historical-critical method . It appears quarterly and contains academic articles as well as book reviews .

The journal was founded in 1881 and is published by the Society of Biblical Literature . The original title of the journal was Journal of the Society of Biblical Literature and Exegesis until 1890 .

The magazine appeared annually from 1882 to 1905, with the years 1886 and 1887 having two issues. From 1906 to 1911 it was published every six months, since 1912 quarterly, with an interruption in 1915 and in some years only two editions were printed.
