Jul (born January 14, 1990 in Marseille , Bouches-du-Rhône ; real name Julien Mari ) is a French rapper .

Life

Jul grew up in the Saint-Jean-du-Désert district of Marseille. He started rapping at the age of thirteen. After he was expelled from his apprenticeship at the age of 17, he first helped his father build swimming pools. However, he described the work as traumatizing. Under the pseudonym Juliano 135 he was discovered and signed as a producer by the Marseilles record label Liga One Industry. Under his current pseudonym Jul , he then joined the rap group Ghetto Phénomène , which also included rappers Veazy, Houari, Friz and Bil-K.

Jul counts the rapper Future in particular as one of his influences, which among other things motivated him to use autotune in his songs. According to his own statements, it takes him around three to four hours to produce a song. Most of his music videos are shot in his hometown of Saint-Jean-du-Désert.

Career

His debut single as a solo artist Sort le cross volé was released in November 2013. The associated video reached over 30 million views on YouTube . The song is also included on his first studio album Dans ma paranoïa . It reached number seven on the French album charts and was awarded platinum. In the same year the mixtape Lacrizeomic was published . Only half a year later he released his second studio album Je trouve pas le sommeil and also achieved platinum status. In 2015, his most commercially successful albums to date were released, Je tourne en rond and My World . With the latter, he reached number one in the French album charts and diamond status for the first time , with which he was able to sell over 500,000 units in France. In August 2015 he left the Liga One Industry label and two months later founded his own label D'Or et de Platine . The projects Émotions , L'Ovni and Je ne me vois pas briller also proved to be successful and represented further number one placements for the artist. In December 2016, the rapper completed his first tour called L'Ovni Tour . In 2017 and 2018 Jul released four more studio albums Je ne me vois pas briller , La Tête dans les nuages , Inspi d'ailleurs and La zone en personne , reaching the top 3 of the French album charts with each project. The release of his eleventh studio album Rien 100 rien began with a release ceremony at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille . In September 2019, its YouTube channel reached a total of over two billion views.
