Juliusz Rómmel

Juliusz Rómmel (Julius Karl Wilhelm Josef Freiherr von Rommel; born June 3, 1881 in Grodno , † September 8, 1967 in Warsaw ) was a Polish general and commander of the Armia Łódź and later the Armia Warszawa during the attack on Poland . He was of German-Baltic origin.

Life

From 1903 he was a career officer in the Russian army. In September 1917 he was involved in the formation of Polish troops in the Ukraine and in the spring of 1918 led the 3rd Ukrainian Corps in Kiev. On November 3, 1918, he went to Warsaw and joined the new Polish army. Initially commander of Artillery Regiment No. 8, at the beginning of the Polish-Soviet War he led the 1st Artillery Brigade and was promoted to colonel . In 1920 he was entrusted with the leadership of the Polish cavalry division and defeated the Soviet cavalry army of Semjon Budjonny together with the Polish 13th division (General Stanislaw Haller) in the cavalry battle near Komarów (August 29 and 30, 1920) despite their twelve-fold superiority. From 1921 to 1924 he was inspector of the cavalry of the 1st Army in Vilnius . Between 1926 and 1929 he was General for Special Use in the High Command, then until 1939 Inspector of the Polish Army.

His role at the beginning of World War II was the subject of controversy. During the German invasion of Poland , he was initially Commander in Chief of the Armia Lodz on the Warta . In the second half of September he defended Warsaw with General Kutrzeba and held the southern front against the German 8th Army under General Blaskowitz . Before the surrender of Warsaw , he gave the order not to regard the advancing Soviet units as the enemy. After the surrender of Warsaw, which he signed, he went into German captivity.

After the war he returned to Poland and joined the Polish People's Army . He was awarded several medals for his services in the war.
