Seniority of United States Senators

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the United States media , US senators are commonly referred to as senior senators and junior senators . Each of the 50 states of the USA sends two senators to the federal senate in Washington, DC The senior of the two senators is called a senior senator, the younger junior senator. If both senators are elected at the same time, which only happens in exceptional cases (e.g. in the event of an unscheduled election due to the resignation of a senator), the first sworn in is the senior senator. In principle, the law does not provide for a difference in the powers and rights of senators, but the internal rules of the Senate give senior senators more powers, whereby a "junior senator" from one state can have a higher seniority than a "senior senator" from one other.
