The Kanisius Sisters are a Roman Catholic religious order ( congregation ) of the Sisters of St. Petrus Canisius in Bürglen near Freiburg in Üechtland (Switzerland).

History and tasks

The religious order was founded in 1898 by the vicar Johannes Evangelist Kleiser (born October 30, 1845 in Schollach (Black Forest), died September 17, 1919 in Freiburg i. Üe.) And Maria Wellauer. The group had a double task: It was supposed to accompany the German-speaking servants and to preach the Gospel through the printed word (“press apostolate”).

To this day, the sisters should lead a life “in the spirit of the family of Nazareth, which is characterized by an unshakable trust in God, a deep faith, lived simplicity, joy and availability towards the brothers and sisters, especially the needy and those who care for us turn. "(from the constitutions)

In Freiburg, the Kanisius Sisters run the Foyer St-Canisius , in which they rent nine furnished rooms and four unfurnished studios to students and single women. The sisters also run Kanisius-Verlag, which has been publishing the Freiburg People's Calendar since 1909 . The Kanisius bookstore has been part of the group of Swiss bookstores Lüthy, Balmer, Stocker and Schoch since 2016 .

The Kanisius Sisters have also been active in Brazil since 1951 under the name Irmas canisianas . The Generalate is in Brazil. There are currently around 25 Sisters in Freiburg and around 65 Sisters in Brazil in ten branches in seven states. The main tasks there are social work with families and street children, school, pastoral work and bookshops.
