Cannibalization (technology)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cannibalization is a form of spare parts procurement . This is used in systems for which new spare parts can no longer be procured or for which procurement would take too long. Often the procedure of maintaining or quickly restoring the function of critical systems applies. Spare parts that are difficult to obtain are, for example, taken from a defective device or “borrowed” from an identical, temporarily unused system. Since this procedure can generate an immense subsequent administrative effort, its use is limited to precisely specified scenarios.
