Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michael Gove (2017)

Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster ("Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster ") is a British government office. He is formally responsible for the duchy, but the leadership is taken over by a body, the council . The actual official burdens of the Chancellor have been so low for decades that the holder of this post is practically a freely available minister with no portfolio .

The post has been held by the previous Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Michael Gove , since the Johnson Cabinet took over government on July 24, 2019 . His duties as Non-Portfolio Minister include overseeing the Cabinet office and overseeing the impact of Brexit on devolution in the UK.

The office has often been given to young cabinet members who are entrusted with responsibilities in a specific area of politics for which there is no institutionalized ministerial office. It was also given to veteran politicians as a sinecure to close their political career, as a comfortable end to their political career. In the past, however, the office has sometimes served as a political sideline for fallen greats on the political stage. This was the case with Winston Churchill, who in 1915 during the First World War, after the failure of the Gallipoli expedition he had initiated , for which he was publicly held responsible, had to resign from the office of Minister of the Navy as one of the core offices of the British government. only to be deported to the post of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster - meaningless in its influence on the war.

More recently, office has been linked to serving as Minister for the Cabinet Office , as in the case of Alan Milburn , who had received the title of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 2004 while rejoining the Cabinet. This enabled him to have a seat in the cabinet without having to take on a time-consuming government post, so that he could devote himself to his duties as campaign manager in the general election in 2005 with full government proximity.
