Capsule catalog

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A capsule catalog (or card book ) is a library catalog and here a special form of the card catalog . It consists of catalog cards that are bound together to form a unit, the capsule. In contrast to conventionally stored catalog cards, you could leaf through capsule-bound cards faster.

Capsule catalogs were mainly used as service catalogs in the 19th century. For practical reasons, the catalog cards used were often larger than the usual ones. It also happened that the catalog cards were held together by a ribbon (garter catalog). Depending on the capacity of the capsules, these contained a different number of catalog notes.
