Potato grater

A potato grater is a kitchen appliance from the regional cuisine of some Central European countries. It is used to mechanically chop uncooked potatoes in preparation for making dishes such as potato dumplings or potato pancakes .

There are two main types of potato grater, which arose from its frequent use in the course of the development of sophisticated food culture.

The older one is a kind of metal board with holes pierced (originally with nails). With the sharp edges of the hole on one side of the board, these have the rubbing surface for the potatoes.

The more sophisticated construction is a hand cranked grater. It has the filling opening at the top and with the rotation of the crank drives a screw inside, which works towards an exchangeable insert with different (squeezing or cutting) openings by advancing the material to be processed. In this way, other kitchen work such as chopping vegetables or cheese can also be carried out.
