Kathimerini ( native Greek griech ΚΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΗ I KATHIMERINI , German 'Die Tageszeitung' ) is an Athens morning newspaper.

It appears in Greek and selected articles also in an English edition, which is sold separately in the USA, but is included in the International Herald Tribune in Greece and Cyprus .

As a liberal-conservative newspaper, the Kathimerini is traditionally close to the conservative Nea Dimokratia , but is now more independent and also employs some columnists who are considered to be more left-wing. So it happens that two columnists have opposing opinions in one issue.

history

The newspaper publisher was founded in 1919 by Georgios Vlachos. After his death, his daughter Eleni Vlachou took over the management. As a conservative established newspaper, the Kathimerini turned against the Greek refugees from Turkey after the catastrophe in Asia Minor in 1921, seeing them as a social problem.

Shortly before the Wehrmacht invaded Greece , the editor wrote an open letter to Hitler, in which he describes the united stance of the Greek people, describes the struggle of Greece in the name of freedom as without alternative, predicts a loss-making victory for Hitler's Germany and the strategic benefit of the invasion.

Despite or because of the liberal-conservative profile of the newspaper, the edition of the newspaper was banned by the military dictatorship . After the end of 1974 the Kathimerini could appear again. In 1988 the media entrepreneur Georgios Koskotas took over the publishing house and had to sell it again after a scandal of embezzlement due to public pressure. Since then, the publisher has belonged to the entrepreneur Aristides Alafouzos .

As the last of the major daily newspapers in Greece, an online edition has been published since 1999, until 2004 the Kathimerini used to publish editorials and essays from the free online edition with a 12 hour delay from the print edition.
