Ken G. Hall

Ken G. Hall ( Kenneth George Hall , born January 22, 1901 in Sydney / New South Wales , † February 8, 1994 ibid) was an Australian film producer, director and screenwriter.

Hall became a reporter for the Sydney Evening News after attending North Sydney Boys' High School in 1916 . The following year he became an assistant to Gayne Dexter in the public relations department of Union Theaters and Australasian Films . He also worked for First National Pictures , which financed a study trip to Hollywood and New York for him in 1925.

In 1928 Hall's first film The Exploits of the Emden was released . During this time he also met the actor Bert Bailey . With him he turned in the 1930s for the production company Cinesound Productions , which he directed until the 1950s, a series of comedies about the Rudd family, which ran with great success. In 1934 the melodrama The Silence of Dan Maitland was written . During World War II, Hall made several documentaries, including Kokoda Front Line! (1942), for which he was the first Australian to receive an Oscar .

Hall's greatest international success was Smithy (1946), a biography of the Australian aviation pioneer Charles Kingsford Smith , which was distributed by Columbia Pictures . After J. Arthur Rank took over the management of Cinesound, Hall founded the first Australian television station in 1956.

Numerous actors received their first major roles in Hall films, including George Wallace , Shirley Ann Richards , Peter Finch , Ron Randell , Jocelyn Howarth , Roy Rene and Cecil Kellaway . Hall published two autobiographical books: Directed by Ken G. Hall (1970) and Australian Film: The Inside Story (1980).
