Kenessa Panevėžys

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kenessa Panevėžys was a synagogue of the Karaites in Panevėžys in Lithuania . The wooden kenesa was in the 18./19. Century built. The building was expropriated by the Soviet Union in 1953 and later not returned to its rightful owners. In the building there was a sewing shop , then a dance hall, and later a design workshop of the Dailė manufacturing plant in Kaunas . In 1970 it was demolished and the construction of a typical multi-storey house began, which was inhabited by families of Soviet Army soldiers. In 1995 the Karaites and the Panevėžys municipality put a memorial stone on the spot.
