A core question of matter referred to in the Matura in Austria a question from the entire syllabus of the chosen subject. In the oral examination, each candidate receives two core questions per subject from the curriculum of the upper level, from which he can choose one, and a special question about his previously selected specialty. The specialty can be chosen by the students themselves in consultation with the teachers and can also be a topic that was not or only marginally dealt with in class.
