Khenchen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The title Khenchen (Tib. Mkhan chen ) literally means chief abbot or major khenpo and is a high religious title within Tibetan Buddhism that is rarely bestowed. It is given to khenpos / abbots who distinguish themselves by keeping their monastic vows clean as well as special learning and teaching activity. Often this goes hand in hand with the management of the monastic headquarters of a sect or subsect.
