Kingfield and Dead River Railroad

The Kingfield and Dead River Railroad is a former railway company in Maine ( United States ). It was founded on June 19, 1893 as a subsidiary of the Franklin and Megantic Railroad and built a railway line with a gauge of 610 millimeters from Kingfield to Carrabasset . The 16.1-kilometer line was opened in 1894. The Franklin and Megantic Railroad , whose own line followed in Kingfield, was in charge of operations. After financial problems, the entrepreneur Josiah S. Maxcy bought the railway company from Franklin & Megantic on August 2, 1898 . In the same year, the 9.6 kilometer extension to Bigelow was put into operation.

On January 30, 1908, the merger with the Franklin and Megantic Railway and the Sandy River Railroad took place. The new company operated under the name Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad . The Kingfield – Bigelow line of the former Kingfield & Dead River Railroad was shut down and dismantled until 1935.
