Kinnaird Castle is a country house in the Scottish county of Angus . The 15th century estate was the seat of the Carnegie family , Earls of Southesk for over 600 years .

history

In the 14th century, charters show that there was a mansion on the property. A tower house at this point was mentioned in 1409 when the property was transferred to Clan Carnegie . After the Battle of Brechin on May 18, 1452, Alexander Lindsay, 4th Earl of Crawford , had the castle burned down because the Carnegie clan had supported King James II .

The castle was rebuilt. In 1617 King James VI stayed. on Kinnaird Castle. The kings Charles I of England and Charles II of England also visited the castle. James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose , spent three years at Kinnaird Castle from 1629. In the winter of 1715, James Francis Edward Stuart , the "Old Pretender" spent some time at the castle. As punishment for supporting the Jacobite Uprising that same year, the property was confiscated by the Crown.

In 1791 the architect James Playfair converted the castle into a large country house. In 1855 the property was returned to the Clan Carnegie and this left the house by the architect David Bryce in the French style of the Victorian period to rebuild.

In 1921 the house burned down to the ground and was rebuilt.
