Box ride

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Crate ride refers to the process in horse racing in which a jockey involved in the race is canceled and is temporarily replaced by another.

etymology

The term box ride has its origin in the premises of the Jockeystube. There the riders sit on boxes between the races in which clothes and equipment are stowed. While the normal obligation for a ride occurs when the starter is given, the jockey sits on this box for the short-term obligation when he is approached by a trainer or owner whether he would like to ride the horse in the race.
