Klaus K. Urban

Klaus K. Urban (born April 27, 1944 in Bärn / Sudetenland ) is a German scientist, writer, musician, slam poet and artist.

Life

Urban grew up in Bramsche and Quakenbrück (Lower Saxony) after fleeing the Sudetenland . He attended the Carolinum grammar school in Osnabrück and the Artland grammar school in Quakenbrück, studied teaching at the then PH Vechta and then worked as a primary school teacher in Hamburg from 1966 to 1970 , where he continued his studies at the same time (psychology, linguistics and pedagogy). Between 1970 and 1979, during his time as a research assistant for ped. Psychology at the University of Osnabrück , he received his doctorate. phil. on the topic of “understanding spoken language” and developed a test for listening comprehension.

Scientific work

From 1979 Urban worked at the University of Hanover at the Institute for Special Education, initially as an academic advisor in the field of speech therapy and then switched to special education psychology, where he qualified as a professor in 1988 in the field of "Education with a focus on language and learning" and in 1993 as an adjunct professor for special needs education Psychology was appointed. Urban was one of the first West German educators and psychologists to work scientifically on giftedness as early as the late 1970s and to publish the first German-language reader in 1982 with contributions from renowned international experts on the subject. Since 1979 he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children (WCGTC) for many years , from 2001 to 2005 its president. In 1985 he co-organized the fifth WCGTC World Conference with 1200 participants from 49 countries in Hamburg . As part of this conference, Urban launched the nationwide writing competition for children and young people, “young people write”, in which over 2500 young poets took part. From 1985 to 1987 he organized the first group with gifted preschoolers in Europe and was responsible for the scientific support of the work sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science. In 1990 he organized the first German-German conference on giftedness with East and West German pedagogical and psychological experts, from which the “Working Group on Gifted Research and Support” emerged, of which he was the first chairman until 1999. For many years he was chairman of the advisory board of the German Schools Academy . Urban developed his own (highly) talented model. He gave a selection of his publications on the subject of giftedness in 2004 in his volume “Hochbegabungen. Tasks and opportunities for education, school and society ”. Much of his work has been published in international specialist journals and readers. Since the 1980s Urban has also practically worked as a talent diagnostician and advisor; He has carried out individual psychological tests on cognitive talent with over 2000 children, adolescents and adults and has advised parents and teachers, since 2009 within the framework of his Institute for Applied Talent Diagnostics and Talent Promotion (ifabb) in Hanover. As a concrete aid for the pedagogical and diagnostic tasks of educators, he has developed questionnaires for recognizing talents in children and adolescents of various ages.

Urban is also an internationally recognized expert in the field of creativity, which is closely related to giftedness. In 2015, he was the first European to receive the WCGTC's “International Creativity Award”. In collaboration with Hans Jellen, Urban designed the “Test for Creative Thinking - Drawing (TSD-Z)” in the mid-1980s, which tries to assess creative potential. After Jellen's death in 1992, he standardized the test and published it in 1995, in 1996 in the English version as “Test for Creative Thinking - Drawing Production (TCT-DP)”. The test has been adapted in different countries and is used worldwide. In 2012 the workbook “Kreaktivitäten” was published, an extensive collection of games, exercises and tasks that are intended to stimulate and promote creative thinking and acting in children, young people and adults.

Writing

Urban writes poems, song lyrics and satirical texts. Many of his poems have appeared in various anthologies and literary magazines. Urban was and is a guest at many reading stages and is involved in readings. From 1990 to 2006 he was involved in the so-called TANDEM readings project, which, after reunification, held readings with one West and one East German writer together in East and West, with Urban this was Jürgen Jankofsky . Urban has published six volumes of "sentence novels". The mostly black-humored "novels" usually only consist of one or two sentences. 

For his satirical texts under the motto “all makes comes from the people. AUS “Urban received the HAFIZ literature prize for satire in 1991 and 1992 and was nominated for the Dresden Satire Prize in 2015. Poetry slams

Since 2008, Klaus Urban has regularly participated in poetry slams . In 2011 he won the Arte Web Slam and with it the last participation card for the German Poetry Slam Championships in Hamburg , where he finished third after winning his preliminary round in the semifinals and thus just missed out on the finals of the top eight. In 2012 he made it to the finals of the nine best German-speaking slam poets , further participation until 2016. In addition, Urban was twice runner-up in Lower Saxony and Bremen. To date he has had around 300 appearances at poetry slams. In 2017 he was co-organizer of the 21st championships "SLAM2017" in Hanover.

Since 2015 he has also appeared at poetry slams together with Verena Urban as the DaM & daM (“The old man & the more”) team. He organizes and moderates his own poetry slams, such as the WaeM slam in Stadthagen and the “wortwerkstatt slam” in Hanover, and conducts poetry workshops with schoolchildren, young people and the elderly.

Musical work

Urban has written and composed numerous songs that he performs in various concert programs. In 1984 the records "Wir sind die Hinterwäldler" and "Neu-Troenen-Bom-be" were made, and in 1989 a single with "blues of courageous people" and "dreams become real". In 1995 Urban released a live recording of his program “Das Blaue vom Himmel” on CD. In 2017 he published a children's book with pictures, rhymes and notes on the topic of "Who wants to learn to swim with us".

Visual arts

In the 1970s, Urban experimented with Op Art objects and then devoted himself to graphic techniques, in addition to drawings and screen printing, above all to etching , resulting in dozens of mostly small-format pictures. In addition to his own solo exhibitions in Hamburg and Reinbek, he was also involved in several exhibitions, for example in Vechta and Oldenburg .

In 2017 he exhibited large-format photos under the motto "Erotic eye showers" in Hanover. Also in 2017, the photo-text volume “7 Ahlemer Histories with Psalms from the Intermediate World” was published, which combines Urban photos from the Rosebusch legacies with short biographical texts about fictional people in connection with the Israelite Horticultural School in Hanover-Ahlem, which was later abused by the Nazis .
