Lists on the subject

The Kliau (also Kelebit , Keliau , Klau , Klawang , Klebit , Trabai ) is a shield from Indonesia.

description

The Kliau is the most famous and most used shield of the Dayak . The shield, including the handle, is carved from one piece of light jelutong wood. The handle is placed lengthways in the center line of the sign. The sides are straight, the ends are pointed. The cross-section of the shield is slightly semicircular. On the outside there are horizontal rattan struts in order to strengthen the stability of the shield and to prevent splintering. The decorations on the shield vary depending on the version. The decoration can be done by painting in different colors and applied on the inside as well as on the outside. The motifs vary. There are rockfish , representations of Aso-figures and all sorts of forms of figurative representations and geometric figures used. For other ethnic groups, the decorations are made from tufts of human hair that come from killed enemies (see also Klebit bok ). In addition, Nassa clams or mother-of-pearl clams can be glued on with the help of tree resins . The Kliau is kept at a distance from the body in combat . The Kliau is used by ethnic groups in Indonesia.
