Knibi technique

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Knibi technique is a method of decorating stoneware , in which shapes were scratched into the clay with a sharpened, rounded wooden stick before firing. The clay pot was turned on a disk and a zigzag line was scratched with the knibish wood by means of a pendulum movement. Ornaments that were incised using a compass were also possible with this technique.

The Knibis technique was particularly used in the manufacture of Westerwald stoneware in the 18th century.
