Counterapproach is a term used in fortress construction .

The counter-approach was a form of approach that was used to defend a fortress against the formal attack of collateral works or from the intermittent fortifications and was expanded at its end to a base for infantry or light artillery .

Attempts were made to counteract the attacker's approach to work or to prevent it. They were an effective means of active defense of fortresses.
