Conversion operation

Conversion companies are armaments companies that are or have been converted to civilian production ( armaments conversion), as well as companies that organize the conversion of areas formerly used by the military into civilian areas. Companies of this type employed up to 8,000 people in the state of Brandenburg around 1996 according to their own information; In 2001 there were still around 5,000. These changes were necessary in the wake of the fall of the Wall in order to convert defense technology companies in the GDR to civilian production; but in a similar way also in the successor states of the Soviet Union and other countries in Eastern Europe. Some conversion companies later accepted orders from the military sector again.
