KORA - Predator Ecology and Wildlife Management is a foundation based in Muri near Bern ( Switzerland ), which is committed to the conservation of wild animals and especially of predators .

history

On August 4, 1967, the Swiss Federal Council decided to reintroduce the Eurasian lynx to Switzerland. The return of this previously exterminated species of predator to Switzerland required well-founded scientific and practice-oriented support. In 1971 the first lynx were released in the Alps . As a result, the Swiss lynx project in the 1980s devoted itself to accompanying and monitoring the reintroduction. In 1994, the not-for-profit association KORA - coordinated research projects for the conservation and management of predatory animals in Switzerland - emerged . In the summer of 2017, the KORA association was transferred to the “KORA - Predator Ecology and Wildlife Management” foundation.

Tasks, goals and partners

KORA plans, directs and coordinates research projects that deal with the ecology of predators in the modern cultural landscape and with the coexistence of humans and predators. The goals of the projects are the conservation and management of the carnivores in order to ensure their long-term survival. The focus is on solution-oriented regulation of conflicts between humans and wild animals.

The tasks mainly include the following areas:

  • Monitoring : On behalf of the Federal Office for the Environment , KORA is in charge of monitoring the population development of the protected predator species lynx, wolf and brown bear in Switzerland.
  • Research : Research into the way of life of predators in the modern cultural landscape and their interactions with humans and other animal populations.
  • Information : Information from authorities, affected groups and the general public.

The most important clients are the Federal Office for the Environment and the cantons . Research projects on basic principles, but also applied research, are funded by public as well as private foundations.

At the international level, important partners include the Large Carnivore Initiative Europe (LCIE), the Cat Specialist Group of the IUCN and all Alpine countries that work together in the Status and Conservation of the Alpine Lynx Population (SCALP) program.

When it comes to monitoring, KORA also works with the so-called Citizen Science approach, in which different groups of people can report their observations of different predatory species.

Monitoring platform

The monitoring, the "monitoring of the development of the predator population in Switzerland", has been directly accessible since December 2018 via an interactive, multilingual (de / fr / it / en) web platform KORA Monitoring Center . The platform in four languages serves authorities, researchers and affected groups.

Even those who are generally interested have free access after registration, but with certain restrictions.
