Hospital daily allowance insurance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daily hospital allowance insurance pays for every day of medically necessary inpatient treatment or a hospital stay a fixed amount of money per day agreed upon when the contract is concluded (also for Saturdays and Sundays). Admission and discharge days are taken into account like whole days. Usually, the level of coverage is freely selectable and does not depend on income. It is used to absorb additional expenses that are not covered by other service providers ( health insurance ). The scope of benefits depends individually on the contract, some insurances only pay for full inpatient, others also for partial inpatient admission, and some make an accident a prerequisite for admission.

Sense and purpose

Insurers advertise daily hospital allowance insurance with the argument that insured persons could cover additional costs in the event of an inpatient hospital stay, in particular travel expenses for family members for hospital visits, domestic help, room costs for TV, telephone and internet, daily room surcharge.

The Stiftung Warentest, however, criticizes the daily hospital allowance insurance as not useful for anyone. Loss of earnings in the event of hospitalization is already covered by the sickness benefit of the health insurance company, for those with private insurance by a private daily sickness allowance insurance (see above).

The daily hospital allowance insurance also enables the financing of accommodation in a single or double room, also as "rooming in" (with children, one parent can also be accommodated in the hospital room). For this purpose, it is significantly cheaper than additional inpatient insurance because it does not have to cover the costs of treatment by the head physician. However, for reasons of liability, the insurance is not sold for this purpose, as in the specific case it cannot be guaranteed that the agreed sum is sufficient for the single or double room and that the hospital will allow a single or double room without treatment by the head physician at all.

costs

The contributions for the daily hospital allowance that can be insured under accident insurance are calculated within the framework of the general tariffs regardless of age, so older people do not have to pay higher contributions than younger people. The respective health questions only need to be answered at the end of the course.

Differentiation from accident and daily sickness allowance insurance

Accident hospital daily allowance is only due for the duration of the inpatient accident treatment. Daily sickness allowance and daily accident allowance are paid in addition to the daily accident hospital allowance, completely independently of a hospital stay.
