The crane tower in Toruń is one of the nine remaining defense towers within the city wall of Toruń .

location

The tower is located in the southern part of the old town complex at 3 Philadelphia Boulevard, west of Mostowa Gate.

history

The tower was built at the end of the 13th century. Its name comes from its function (crane). This was expanded in 1823 and connected to the granary behind it at 1 Mostowa Street.

architecture

The tower was erected on a square plan made of Gothic bricks in the Venetian Association . During the renovation in the 19th century, it was given four floors and a usable attic. The original division into floors was different, as evidenced by the diagonally laid Gothic brick friezes. There are loopholes from the 19th century on the ground floor. The upper floors have large openings that are closed with wooden shutters. In the attic there is a wooden crane with the preserved mechanism. On the north side, the tower is connected to the building at 1 Mostowa Street (the so-called Swedish granary , now Hotel Spichrz ) by a hanging passage made of a skeleton structure with plastered panels. The tower is covered with a gable roof.
