One of the ruins of Kua

Kua was a medieval trading town on the small island of Juani , south of Mafia Island on the east coast of Africa, in what is now Tanzania .

The city goes back to the 10th century and is said to have been founded by Persians from Shiraz . It fell under Portuguese rule in the 15th and 16th centuries and then lost its importance. It was attacked by the Sakalava from Madagascar around 1820 . These are said to have been cannibals and ate many of the residents.

The ruins of the stone-built city can still be seen in the forest. Two mosques , a house with a bathroom and graves are worth mentioning. The ruins are now a tourist attraction.
