Art (drama)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Art" (original title: "Art" ) is the third play by the French author Yasmina Reza . It premiered in Paris in 1994 and quickly became a global success; it has received several prizes ( Molière , Tony Award , Laurence Olivier Award ) and has so far been translated into 40 languages.

The play is about a longstanding friendship between three men being put to the test by a picture. One of the three (Serge) bought a “white picture with white stripes” - for no less than 200,000 francs . He defends himself and his decision, the second (Marc) attacks him, the third (Yvan) tries to mediate. Their long-standing friendship is shaken.

The comedy not only irritates laugh; laughter is the theme of the piece. The author herself says: “The drama of“ art ”is not that Serge buys the white picture, but that you can no longer laugh with him.” On the autobiographical background, she adds: “The story happened to me with a friend who bought a white picture. He's a dermatologist and I asked him, 'How much did you pay for it?' And he replied: 'Two hundred thousand francs.' And I roared with laughter. But so did he. We stayed friends because we laughed. When he read the piece, he laughed too. It didn't prevent him from continuing to love his picture. "
