Löbenichtsche Church

The Löbenicht Church was a church building in the Königsberg district of Löbenicht . It was not rebuilt after the Second World War.

history

During the time of the order, the Löbenicht church was called “St. Barbara on the mountain ”. Burned down several times, it was finally rebuilt in 1776 as a rectangular, plastered brick building. It seemed as if the tall, slender top of the tower was floating high above the roofs of Löbennothing. Immanuel Kant , who could watch the building from his office on Prinzessinenstrasse, loved the sight of it. Inside, the church had bright, beautiful rococo furnishings such as the carved pulpit altar by Friedrich Suhse . The organ built by Johann Preuss was also kept in the Rococo style.

The church survived the battle for Königsberg badly damaged (tower). In the years that followed, up to 1948, services could still be held in the nave for the Germans who remained in Königsberg. The remains of the church were blown up and removed around 1955. Today there is a prefabricated building from the 1960s in its place. The former peripheral development can still be guessed from the course of the remaining historical cobblestone street paving. The Löbenicht Church and its immediate surroundings are part of the extended area of the planned "old town" project, with the planned historicizing reconstruction of the historic districts of the Königsberg inner city that were destroyed by the war and the post-war period.
