L'Indépendant is a weekly newspaper from Burkina Faso . It is published every Tuesday in Ouagadougou .

The Indépendant was founded in 1993 by Norbert Zongo , Burkina Faso's most prominent journalist, who, as editor-in-chief and publisher, shaped the Indépendant significantly until his death in 1998 and continues to shape it to this day.

Editorial line

The name says it all , l'Indépendant - in German the Independent - is by far the most critical and most independent newspaper in Burkina Faso. After the violent death of Norbert Zongo , it became a national symbol of freedom of the press , human rights and democracy .

This is what sets the thematic focus of the Indépendant : the most prominent topics are the protection of human rights and the fight against nepotism and corruption in Burkina Faso, with a particularly keen eye on President Blaise Compaoré and his entourage . In contrast to most of the other daily and weekly newspapers in Burkina Faso, the Indépendant is dedicated to investigative journalism and also takes great risks with research.

Although the high journalistic quality of the Indépendant could not be maintained after Zongo's death, the Indépendant is still one of the most important quality newspapers in West Africa.
