L3 (operating system)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

L3 is a microkernel - operating system on Intel x86 basis. It was designed as " very lean and features fast, message-based, synchronous IPC, simple-to-use external paging mechanisms and a security mechanism based on secure domains (tasks, clans and chiefs) ".

L3 is the predecessor of L4 , a micro-kernel with a similar concept. The system was developed as a complete, non-graphic operating system by Jochen Liedtke and his team at the GMD Research Center for Information Technology . It is almost entirely written in the structured programming language ELAN . Exceptions to this are the kernel and some hardware drivers in assembler and CDL2 . It has been in use at TÜV Süd since 1992 .
