Unstable verb

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An unstable verb is a verb with two syntactic uses: transitive (with subject and object) and intransitive, where the intransitive subject corresponds to the transitive object. The intransitive variant is then more precisely an unaccusative verb .

Examples
  • The child breaks the plate (transitive)
  • The plate breaks (intransitive)
