history

As early as 1894, a concept was developed as part of the studies for the “Nova Capital” (new capital) by Luís Cruls for the construction of the reservoir . However, it was only built during the reign of President Juscelino Kubitschek . The redesign began on October 22, 1956 and inaugurated by President Kubitschek on April 21, 1960. Lake Paranoá covers an area of around 48 square kilometers and has a maximum depth of 38 meters. The mean water depth is 12 meters. The lake is mainly fed by the Rio Paranoá and a few small tributaries. When the sea area was flooded, three islands were created, the Ilha do Paranoá , the Ilha do Retiro and the Ilha dos Clubes .

Embassies, consulates, hotels, restaurants and water sports facilities are located around its banks, as well as the official residence of the President of the Republic.
