The Largo Jean Monnet is a place in the downtown area of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It is formed from an extension at the confluence of Rua Júlio César Machado with Rua do Salitre . Since April 20, 1988 he has borne the name of Jean Monnet (1888–1979), the first President of the High Authority of the Coal and Steel Community .
The almost triangular square in the municipality of Santo António is located on the site of the former Teatro do Salitre and the Tauródromo. Both buildings from the 19th century no longer exist today. In the center of the square there is a small green area with a bust of the eponymous Jean Monnet.
The rear side of the Teatro São Jorge forms the east side of the square, on the northwest side is the new building of the Centro Europeu Jean Monnet , an information center of the European Union . The square is often used as a venue for demonstrations for or against EU policies.
