Larry D. Welch (born June 9, 1934 in Guymon , Oklahoma ) is a former general in the US Air Force and was most recently Chief of Staff of the Air Force .

Life

After graduating from Liberal High School in 1952, he studied business administration at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Business Administration). He later studied international relations at George Washington University with a Master of Science degree (MS International Relations).

During his military career with the US Air Force, he became commander of the 9th Air Force in 1981 and then from 1982 to 1984 Deputy Chief of Staff, Programs and Resources. He was then Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force before he was the successor to General Bennie L. Davis, Commander of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) between 1985 and 1986 .

Most recently, General Welch was Chief of Staff of the Air Force during his active military service from July 1, 1986 to July 30, 1990, making it the highest-ranking officer in the US Air Force. His own successor as SAC commander was General John T. Chain, Jr.

After retiring from active military service, he was President of the Institute for Defense Analyzes (IDA) between 1990 and 2003 and then a member of the board of directors of the private military company CACI from 2002 to 2006 . Since 2006 he has been President of IDA again. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Henry L. Stimson Center and is involved in the Council on Foreign Relations .
