Latgales Gaisma

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Latgales Gaisma (German: Lettgallens Licht ) was a regional political party in Latvia . The core area was the Latgale region (Latvian: Latgale ) around the country's second largest city, Daugavpils (German: Dünaburg ).

Latgales Gaisma was led by Rihards Eigims , a Daugavpils businessman. In 2001 the party won the city's local elections, and Rihards Eigims became mayor. In 2003 he had to give up his post after a lost vote of confidence, numerous members of his party in the city council had previously defected.

Outside of Daugavpils, the party was less successful. In the parliamentary elections to the Latvian parliament, the Saeima , on October 5, 2002, Latgales Gaisma won 9.3 percent of the vote in Latgale, but only 1.5 percent nationwide and failed to pass the five percent hurdle . (For comparison: the party alliance “ For Human Rights in United Latvia ”, which is mainly supported by the Russian-speaking residents, received 36.5 percent of the vote in Latgale and 19 percent of the vote nationwide).

The party later ran for elections as part of the Latvian Social Democratic Labor Party and was dissolved by Eigims on February 8, 2007. Eigims himself was briefly mayor of Daugavpils again in 2009 for the LSDSP and in 2010 he was a member of the 10th Saeima for the Alliance of Greens and Farmers .
