from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Laugaliai (German Laugallen ) is a village in the Dauparai-Kvietiniai district in the district of Klaipėda in Lithuania . The place is about 1 km west of the prosperous small town Gargždai . It is on the bus route from Klaipeda to Gargždai. The bus stop is in the immediate vicinity of the old post office on the road to Garßen.

history

Around 1800 the village, which was also known as Kuckerlaugallen or Kukorlaugallen , had around 120 inhabitants. This number rose to around 300 by 1939. Until 1944 the place belonged to the Prussian district of Memel and was only a few dozen meters away from the old East Prussian-Lithuanian border. In 1945 the village came to the Soviet Union and the German population was expelled. Today Laugaliai is part of the Lithuanian national territory.

population

The population has declined due to the economic boom in Lithuania as younger residents moved to the cities. Some German residents live in Laugaliai who speak the old East Prussian dialect. All of them were women who married the so-called Kleinlitauer, who lived in East Prussia at the time.

Facilities

In Laugaliai there is a large old people's home, which was the destination of aid deliveries by German organizations in the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
