Stupa with raised bell

The Lawkananda Pagoda ( Burmese လောကနန္ဒာ စေ တီ ; pronounced: lɔ́ka̰nàɴda̰ zèdì, also Lokananda ) is a Buddhist stupa in Bagan , Myanmar .

history

It was built in 1059 under King Anawrahta and houses a copy of the tooth relic from Kandy ( Sri Lanka ). Anawrahta had received this because he had sent the Ceylonese experienced monks and copies of the holy scriptures that had served well in the revival of Buddhism there after the attack by the Indian Cholas.

description

The pagoda sits high above the Ayeyarwady River and is therefore a landmark for the ships on the river. It is one of the older stupas of Bagan and with its tall bell is reminiscent of the traditional forms of the Pyu . Its base is octagonal and five-tiered, and the stupa is crowned by an Hti .
