Company history

On August 11, 1960, the companies Veil & Sohn (Frankenthal), Gebr. Pütz oHG (Cologne), Heinrich Winkels (Söthe, Mettmann), Ludwig Zeus oHG (Elz), Wilhelm Kohlenisen (Mögglingen), Hermann Zeus KG (Großauheim) founded , Karl Limbach (Eitorf / Sieg), Friedrich Linne (Düsseldorf), Paul Kaiser (Remscheid) and the company August Kratz (Illingen) the trading organization Lekkerland Germany . Werner Veil became the first managing director. In the following years other wholesalers joined the Lekkerland group.

At the same time, food wholesalers under the name Lekkerland were established in other European countries as companies affiliated with the group, first in 1975 in Belgium / Luxembourg. In 1989 Lekkerland Europa Holding GmbH was founded. In 1991 Lekkerland International GmbH followed .

The German Lekkerland wholesalers merged to form district headquarters and in 1991 to five legally independent regional headquarters. In 1996 Lekkerland merged with the wholesale group Sügro. In 1998 the subsidiary ESTE was taken over by the Shell oil company.

On January 1, 1999, Lekkerland GmbH & Co. KG and Tobaccoland Großhandelsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG merged to form Lekkerland-Tobaccoland GmbH & Co. KG. The vending machine division was incorporated into the new Tobaccoland Automatengesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, which is still a majority shareholding of Austria Tabak AG. The main initiator of the merger was the then Lekkerland managing director Wolfgang Zinn, who subsequently managed both companies.

At the beginning of 2005 the trading company was changed from Lekkerland-Tobaccoland GmbH & Co. KG to Lekkerland GmbH & Co. KG . In 2007, the German business was separated from the group holding company, with a change of legal form and renaming of the holding company to Lekkerland AG & Co. KG . The operative business in Germany was transferred to Lekkerland Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG .

In December 2015, Lekkerland (Schweiz) AG took over Contadis AG , the wholesale division of the Swiss cigar manufacturer Oettinger Davidoff ; the transaction was completed in early 2016.

According to media reports, the Cologne-based Rewe Group announced on May 28, 2019 that it wanted to take over Lekkerland in full. This should strengthen the convenience food business. The Federal Cartel Office approved the takeover on October 9, 2019.
