The Lendwirbel (notation in the logo: LEND WRBL) is a social movement that since 2007, a socio-cultural festival in the fourth  Grazer District Lend and performs as a spring awakening in adjacent neighborhoods. The festival takes place every year for about a week at the beginning of May on squares, streets, the Volksgarten park and sometimes on Murinsel. Local hosts support the festival, and individual events are also held indoors. The festival is an expression of the general desire to use public space together in order to provide positive impulses for living together.

Emergence

The activity arose from the desire and motivation to jointly (temporarily) design and use public space. The development of the activity over the years is closely linked to social networks in the district. This is how the lumbar vertebra came into being within a small group of people. Through the organic growth of the social network over the years, the character of the changeability of the lumbar vertebra developed. The "lumbar vertebra" consists of a constantly changing social network of people with the common concern of using urban space and thus being part of a public debate. The question is: How can the living space be designed and how can coexistence function as best as possible? The lumbar vertebra network has grown rapidly in recent years and has formed into a kind of social movement. The network thus reflects the diversity of our society and is based on the creativity and knowledge of the many people involved.

Principles

Participation, co-creation and the greatest possible degree of personal responsibility are central principles. Spontaneity, surprises, overcoming social boundaries characterize the festival, in which all participants play an essential role and the boundaries between producers and consumers should be removed. This is accompanied by the rejection of commercial exploitation interests. In 2009 the decision was made to hold the district festival decentrally at different locations and to forego a central stage in order to prevent eventing. The preparation of the district festival takes place primarily through networking meetings. The implementation takes place through volunteering and volunteering. In 2011, the network's concerns were written down in a manifesto.

In the months before each lumbar vertebra, there are open network meetings for interested parties , the organizing people remain in the background by name. Network meetings took place in the office community Püro Mariahilfergasse 24, the Orpheum , a temporarily re-used business premises at Volksgartenstraße 4.

Activities and projects

Different formats determine the lumbar vertebrae: music, discourses, symposia, artistic projects, art in public space and socio-cultural activities take place in this context. Since 2007, hundreds of projects have been implemented within the framework of the lumbar vertebra, initiating sustainable changes in the district. It is also self-critically reflected on the extent to which an upgrading of the district leads to forms of gentrification . On October 15, 2011, on the day of outrage, the opening of Hier ist Platz took place. In 2014 the district conference Lend 2020 took place. As part of this bottom-up conference, the desired development of the district over the next few years was discussed.

The lumbar vertebra also affects the Annenviertel; the north side of Annenstrasse is in the Lend district, the southern row of houses is in the Gries district .
