Leonti Mroweli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leonti Mroweli ( Georgian ლეონტი მროველი ) was a Georgian chronicler from the 11th century. Mroveli is not a surname, but an adjective for the Diocese of Ruissi, of which he was likely bishop. Hence another modern German transliteration of his name Leonti (us) is from Ruissi .

Except in the later annotations to the manuscripts of " Kartlis Tskhovreba " ( Georgian ქართლის ცხოვრება , Georgian Chronicles), an archbishop of Ruisi with the name Leonti is mentioned only three times: once in a manuscript from the 11th century from Mount Athos ; once in the Georgian translation of " Euthymius des Georgiers Leben" and once in a Georgian inscription from the village of Trechwi, from 1066. The assumptions that Leonti Mroveli lived in the 8th or early centuries are now rejected.
