The name comes from Frisian , derived from "leavje", the Frisian word for like, love or like. Modified and with the suffix "-ke", which expresses a belittling, it becomes "Levke".

An origin from Low German is also possible : "lev" for "dear" and "-ke", analogous to the above derivation, as a diminutive , in High German thus synonymous with "-chen", so that the meaning "dear" would also result here .
