Elevator van

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Liftvan or lift is the name of wooden transport boxes for overseas shipping. In the “Handbook for Jewish Emigration” from 1938 the exact dimensions are listed: A lift measured 2.28 by 2.20 meters by 2 meters in length, but was also available 3 or 4 meters long.

After the beginning of the Second World War , the belongings of the Jews who were forced to emigrate were no longer shipped. In the ports of Hamburg and Bremen, where the sturdy furniture transport boxes were stacked, they were also called "Judenkisten". In 1940 these Jewish lifts were confiscated and their contents were later auctioned.

A so-called overseas lift van made of solid wood is now available in sizes 5.8 and 11.6 cubic meters. The ship transport is carried out as groupage in containers.
