Lincoln is the capital and the second largest city of the US state Nebraska with 258,470 inhabitants in the 2010 US census , for the year 2015 the population is estimated at 277,348 inhabitants. The city was named after Abraham Lincoln and is the seat of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln .

history

Lincoln was founded as Lancaster in 1856 . Before the settlers arrived, the area was inhabited by Indian tribes, particularly the Pawnee and Lakota . Since 1867 the settlement has been the capital of the state of Nebraska. On April 1, 1869, the settlement was renamed Lincoln . In the same year the resident university was founded. From 1870 Lincoln was connected to the railroad. Charles Lindbergh , among others, learned to fly in the renowned flight school, which closed in 1947 . In the 1920s and 1930s, Lincoln also benefited greatly from increasing road, rail and air traffic, as the city is located at intersections. The population has grown rapidly to this day.

According to the 2010 census, there were 258,379 residents, 103,546 households, and 60,300 families who were resident in the city. The population density was 1,119 people per square kilometer. 86% of the population belonged to the white population group. The proportion of Latinos was 6.3%, the proportion of African Americans was 3.8%, and the proportion of Asians and immigrants from the Pacific Islands was 2.6%.

In 2010, young people under the age of 18 lived in 27.7% of households. On average, 2.36 people lived in one household, with the average family size being 3.01 people. 44% of the population were married.

22.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 15.7% were 18 to 24 years old, 27.9% were 25 to 44 years old, 22.9% were 45 to 64 years old and 10.7% were at least 65 years old.

The average age was 31.8 years.

The median income per household in 2016 was $ 59,344. From 2013 to 2016, the median income per household increased by approximately 10.12%, while the median income per household in the USA rose by an average of 7.02%.

The economy consists primarily of the service sector, such as the finance and insurance industries. The city's largest employer is the state of Nebraska (9,182 employees), followed by Lincoln Public Schools (8,170 employees) and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (6,427 employees). The largest companies founded in Lincoln include Nelnet , Ameritas , Assurity Life Insurance Company , Fort Western Stores or the American Linen Supply Company ( ALSCO ) founded in 1889 , the inventor of the towel dispenser.
