This list shows the standard sizes for round cells (R) according to nomenclature method 1 of IEC 60086 .

The International Electrotechnical Commission - IEC for short - is an international standards organization in the field of electrical engineering and electronics based in Geneva. The standard IEC 60086 Primary batteries (primary cells = non-rechargeable galvanic cells ) defines the nomenclature for battery types , among other things . There are two methods of doing this:

  • Method 1, until October 1990, but still widespread: Cell size cannot be read off directly from the type number. Standard sizes were simply specified / included in the standard and numbered. There are 3 form factors:
    • R = round (cylindrical)
    • F = flat (flat, built up in layers)
    • S = square (cuboid)
  • Method 2, from October 1990: the maximum diameter and height can be read directly from the name. There are 2 form factors:
    • R = round (cylindrical)
    • P = non-round (not cylindrical)

With both methods, a letter is placed in front of the form factor, which describes the chemical system of the cell. If the form factor is not preceded by another letter, it means a zinc-carbon cell or simply the size, depending on the topic.

Explanations for the table:

  • "Type IEC 1" column: size designations according to method 1 of the IEC-60086 standard. There was still no connection between type number and cell size. Standard sizes were simply specified or included in the standard and numbered consecutively.
  • Column " ø " and "height": total diameter and total height in millimeters.
  • Column "N./max": For some types are the millimeter indications as N ennwert in the standard set (nominal cell dimensions) , for most as Max imalwert ( Maximum battery dimensions ).
  • Column "Type IEC 2": IEC size designations according to method 2 (from October 1990) - This column was added here separately. The designations result from the maximum values ​​for diameter and height. Since for some types only the nominal values ​​are mentioned in the standard, it may not be possible to infer the IEC-2 designations directly, which is why these only appear in italics.
  • "Shape" column: All round cells whose height is smaller than their diameter are considered button cells and are highlighted in orange .
