List of abbots and prince abbots of the prince monastery Kempten

Copper printing plate from the 17th century with a depiction of the Kempten prince abbot Roman Giel von Gielsberg. Since the plate is designed for printing, it is mirror-inverted.

The list of abbots and prince abbots of the Princely Monastery of Kempten distinguishes all prelates of the Princely Monastery from the 11th and 12th centuries onwards. The first abbot was Audogar , with whose name the foundation of the monastery in the 8th century is connected. From around the 12th century the title of prince abbot is attested. The last prince abbot was Castolus Reichlin von Meldegg , who lost his power with the secularization in 1803.

Some of the prince abbots exercised episcopal rights . The prince abbots of Kempten are buried in the collegiate and parish church of St. Lorenz , which was only built in the 17th century after the monastery was destroyed during the Thirty Years War . The mortal remains of the rulers were reburied from the destroyed Marienmünster , the collegiate church up to the destruction of the monastery, in the new collegiate church St. Lorenz in tombs and in the crypt. The attached plates with the names given do not necessarily correspond to the person buried behind them.

Fictitious abbots and counter-abbots are problematic with the listing. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the prince monastery was unable to draw up a complete list of abbots and failed after several attempts, mainly due to the lack of sources. Completeness and correctness must therefore be waived in this case.
